Virginia Beach Race
The Mid Atlantic ATV Association recently promoted their yearly VA Beach Race. Nearly 250 riders and people swarmed to Virginia Beach for a fun filled weekend. Shane Hitt (Sparks Racing) took home the honors in the big money class, (called the Sandbox MX Challenge) on Saturday night. This marked the first time a night beach race was ever held in the States. Tim Farr (Baldwin Motorsports) followed Shane Dog in the sandbox race but got tangled up with Matt “The Kangaroo Kid” Coulter, who flew in from England to compete on promoter Randy Dinkens 250R. “I went down low to get a better bite in the packed sand, which is closer to the ocean. Just my luck, the tide was coming in. Turns out, I went low while a wave was coming in. It drenched me and drowned out the quad. It was blubbering out as I tried to get off the track. Just my luck my good mate, Tim Farr found the same spot I was heading to as he chased Shane Hitt for the win. We collided and this ruined his hopes of a good finish. I feel horrible taking him out of the money like this”, said Coulter on the mishap. “This is the roughest track I’ve ever rode on in my life. It’s also the most fun I think I’ve ever had racing!”, explained Coulter about the track.

If this isn’t cool to you — you’re at the wrong web site — see ya later.“If I could race about five of these events per year I wouldn’t even bother with the nationals, I love this stuff!”, said Nac’s Racing’s Greg Little about the quality event. Sean Sermini and Robby Whitehead were the two announcers for the Saturday night program. They did an outstanding job.

The weather was perfect and the locals were all very excited to witness how impressive ATV racing can be. Matt Coulter is planning on jumping the beach pier next year to try to bring in a large spectator attendance to go along with the show. Sounds like a great idea to us!

Here’s a look at the new ATVA logo. Yours truly, John Pellan has been invited to be an editor for the new ATVA newsletter. We meet May 17 to finalize the layout and material of the new publication. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with all the new news on the ground breaking All-Terrain-Vehicle-Association.

Fast-Trak Promo goes cross country racing
You might have noticed our banner advertisement on our Buddy-Up Cross Country Series. We recently promoted the grand opening round of the new series. What a blast! If you’ve never tried harescramble, (cross country) racing, you’re missing a great experience. Our round one of the six round series, held in Lisbon, OH — the same place that held a GNCC national a few years ago, was a complete success. We can’t wait for round two! If you’re anywhere near Canton Ohio on June 9th, find a buddy or if you dare — “ironman” it out alone for the 3-hour BUCCS.

GNCC News
Speaking of Cross Country racing…
Starting Tuesday, June 5 at 11:00am, Fox Sportsnet will begin airing the 2001 Grand National Cross Country Series. For 26 consecutive weeks the Network will broadcast hour-long race coverage starting with the Bike event from Kirton Ranch in Okeechobee, FL. The following week will air the ATV event. The rest of the series will continue to air in alternating order of bikes and quads.

New GNCC series?
Do the Coombs family have it going on, or what? Latest rumor is that there will be a separate west coast GNCC series. It’s about time states west of the Mississippi River get some national events, who better than Racer Productions to make it all happen. We’ll keep you up to date with new news on this as we hear it. Check out the all new GNCC website — www.gnccracing.com

Eichner and Gregory dominate at the Terrible Town 250 Desert Race
Doug Eichner, who is just out of a cast from a broken leg he suffered at the final round of the SFX Stadium series, teamed up with fellow desert racing legend, John Gregory to top the ATV class overall at the first round of the Best in the Desert series. The Duncan Racing/Roll Design/Golden West/IMS supported team won with twenty minutes to spare on the second place entry. What’s more is they scored an astounding 10th place overall, besting 50 motorcycle teams besides the other 24 ATV teams entered. Their overall finish is exceptional because the duo started behind each and every motorcycle team before setting sail across the 250 miles of rough and rocky Nevada desert course.

Duncan/Felix set new ATV World Record
Duncan Racing riders Doug Eichner and Allen White II teamed with Mexico based Team Felix. Riders Enrique Felix, Alfonso “Poncho” Castro, Rene “Fido” De La Rocha and Denton Racing’s main man — Nick Nelson to form a six man team to compete in the FRT 24 hour Endurance Championships.

The race is held every 2 years in the desert of Southern California. The race is run continuously around a 10-mile course (desert terrain). Starting at 7:00am Saturday and finishing 7:00am Sunday.

The team anchored by Doug Eichner, fresh off his World Championship ATV 4-Stroke victory the week before was fast and consistent all race, leading 23 of the 24 hours. Except for a few crashes and regular maintenance/fuel stops the race went well with no serious problems.

The team had outside hopes of eclipsing the old world record of 1080 miles set in 1989. But high winds throughout the race dimmed their hopes. Eichner continued to gas the potent Duncan Racing PC 2000, Roll Design Lobo Chassis — 250R for all it was worth and ended up setting a new ATV World Record of 1098 miles. (Team Honda holds the motorcycle record at 1418 miles. Set at the same event).

Racers for Research 5th Annual Flat River Grand Prix
Mark this one in your calendars. It’s the 5th annual Flat River Grand Prix in St. Joe Park in Park Hills, MO on June 30th. All proceeds from the event go to the March of Dimes. Each year this event gets bigger and bigger, they’re expecting a huge turn out. ATVs start the one and a half hour harescramble at 9am

ATVA GNC referee, Tom Prendergast, is one of the promoters of the event. If you are at all interested in the event talk to Tom for a flyer or call the Missouri Dirt Riders at (636)398-4468 or the March of Dimes at (800) 289-4805

ImageWarlock Chassis
Another quality aftermarket frame is now on the market for serious rec-riders and racers wanting to make their 250Rs the best they can possibly be. This time it comes from Dale Sibert of Warlock Chassis. The unofficial price is $2000 a frame. We understand that they also have bolt on products like steering stems. If you’re in the frame upgrade market, give Dale a call at (330) 325-9009 and tell him ATV Scene sent you. Dale’s a good guy in our book, he helped us in a major way at our first ATV Racing promotions, the Deerfield, OH National in 1998.

ImageJohn T Martinez
John (JT) Martinez of Cedar Crest, NM broke his back in October of 2000. Most people recovering from a severe injury of this type are home watching television. Not JT, in his first race back from the injury he placed third at an event in his home state, this after starting in the second row.

Here’s a great example of what professionalism is all about. Check out JT’s race quad. He thanks Trinity Racing for his 313cc 60 hp motor and and Legacy Racing for the rest of the needed go fast products.
