Red Bud GNC Round 5
Buchanan, Michigan- May 19-20, 2001
Jeremiah Jones waits for his interview on the podium.
Jeremiah was fast and smooth as his legendary sponsor, Curtis Sparks used to be.
TC Racing's Tom Carlson looks over the damage sustained by "Digger" Doug's massive Doug Henry style endo.
A look at the winding Red Bud track. Seen here is the lower section double, then step up double.
Tim Farr rode to a smooth second place overall. He now falls to second in the GNC point's race by one point behind Jeremiah Jones.
Jones cakewalks to a 1-1 victory
"My back has been feeling pretty good. All those trips to the chiropractor
have really paid off. Only problem now is the sharp pain I'm getting in my leg.
O well, I'll just ride the pain off", said Jeremiah Jones while he waited
amongst 472 total entries for his turn in selecting a gate position at this
year's Red Bud National in Buchanan, MI. While - "riding the pain off",
Jones ended up out riding the entire field.
Even though there were several strong running 440cc four-strokes on the line, It was Sparks Racing two-srokes 1-2-3 for the start of moto one. "T-Doc" Spader lead the pack on his Lone Star Sparks powered R. while Sparks Racing's Shane "Dog" Hitt, and Jeremiah Jones followed. Tim Farr and "Digger" Doug Gust rounded out the top five.
It didn't take long for Jones to work his way to Spader's rear fenders. Gust charged hard to pass Farr, maybe a little too hard, since Gust crashed on the big tabletop before LoRocco's Leap. "I was shifting into fourth and lugging it over the big jump in the laps before I crashed. For some reason on that lap, I had a little trouble getting a good shift into fourth - so I figured I would just pull third hard all the way to the peak. The motor pulled the steep take off way better than I thought and sent me into orbit", said Gust about his Doug Henry style endo. In a wise move Gust elected not to land the 150-foot launch and jumped off the back. He was uninjured but his new Suzuki needed some major attention for moto two's outing. With Gust out of the way Kory Ellis found himself in the five spot. Moto one came to an end in a Sparks Racing domination. Jones easily won, Spader somehow took second despite an almost flat tire while Shane Hitt took the three-spot.
Moto 2
Despite talk of 440cc thumper advantages, Shane Hitt pulled the holeshot on
his 265cc Sparks Racing R. Hot on his heals was Baldwin Motorsports' Tim Farr,
Jones and "T-Doc" Spader. "Digger" Doug Gust tucked in the
five-spot thanks to an axle and A-arm transplant by the fast working TC Racing
crew. Kory Ellis gave chase to trail the front runners in the six-spot, while
up front -- Farr took the lead. Later, Bowling Green KY's Jeremiah Jones wicked
up his JPMX ride and found room to pass Farr for the lead. Jones cakewalked
his way through the white flag lap while Farr held ground on Spader, Gust, Ellis
and Hitt in his attempt to score a second place overall. Jones would eventually
put 16 seconds on Farr in his journey to the checkers. "I talked to Curtis
Sparks just before the final moto. I told him I was just going to relax, concentrate
on the track and run my own race. Looks like it worked out pretty well",
said Jones after the race with much approval from the many Kentucky based fans
that travel the GNC circuit to cheer on their hometown hero.
Farr wound up cruising to a somewhat comfortable second place overall by holding off Doug Gust and Travis Spader. "I didn't have to push it real hard today, like the last race. I just concentrated on being smooth and steady. It was nice to have a little bit of breathing room for a change", explained Farr on the podium. Spader raced to an extremely respectable third place overall despite a flat tire in moto one and the loss of his front brakes in moto two, (a rock split his brake line).
