Maxxis 6 Hours of ATV America — Wisconsin
Round 2
Arkansaw, WI
July 1, 2006
Round two of the Maxxis 6 Hours of America tour made its way to Arkansaw, WI for the second annual 6 Hours of Wisconsin event.
The Arkansaw Cycle Park received a healthy face lift for the 2006 riding season. The Robinson family went above and beyond in preparation, as did Wisconsin’s Chuck Wachs of Wachs Motorsports who once again dialed in the five mile loop after spending nearly an entire week on the property. Wachs also raced the event as he did last year on the same well-prepared ATK. The all-Wisconsin team of Wachs, Roger Brown and Ken “Quadfather” Marcou, (who leads points in nearly every age class at the Extreme Dirt Track National Series – including the Plus 25 class) finished tenth overall and runner up in the Plus 30 class behind the 3 Amigos Team of Jason McCoy, Dan Wipper and Shawn Hohneke.
As for the overall… Morphew Racing absolutely dominated just as they did at the Maxxis 6 Hours opener in Indiana. The Tennessee based team looked unstoppable with Ryan Morphew, Donald Ockerman and Jonathan Shaff ripping up the track at blistering speed. The team is led by Ryan Morphew who currently sits second in GNCC Pro Am points. If your team plans to win a 6 hours of America event this is the team you’ll need to pass.
Runner up on the day went to Rob Weis, Scott Lindner and Jon Hughes of Team Z1R on the #47 Honda. Six pro teams were present, but it was the two-man A class team Team Spindler/Matyka Racing (CJ Spindler, Wade Matyka) that claimed the final spot on the podium. The duo talked a local Polaris dealer into parting with a stock Polaris Outlaw. They used their borrowed quad impressively and turned quite a few heads.
It looks as though Shrum Racing will end up winning the free pro entry to this year’s Maxxis 12 Hours of ATV America — where they’ll compete for the Maxxis $20k purse in front of nearly all ATV media outlets in America and beyond. After turning many heads at the 6 Hours of KY the two man team of DJ Shrum and Devon Jarrett repeated with another impressive ride.
“The Wisconsin track was awesome!”, said Devon Jarrett of Shrum Racing. “I have more fun at these 6 hour races than I do in any other series I race. We’re getting plenty of seat time and preparation for this year’s 12 Hours. We’ll be ready! We can’t wait!”
The Shrum Racing team made it interesting when they stalled off the line and started back in the pack. Nonetheless the two young guns reeled everyone in and checked out for the easy victory on the track that some might call — the best kept motocross track secret, as far as unique and well thought out tracks go.
While Shrum Racing slowly and steadily increased their lead on the five mile course they left an incredible battle in their wake.
Can-Am DS450’s First Race!
At the time of the race even though only four of Can-Am’s pre production DS450 machines were present in America, one of them ended up on the 6 Hrs of WI start line.
We assumed WORCS riders Jeremy Schell and Josh Frederick of the Epic Racing Cam-Am Factory Team would carry honors as the first to ride Can-Am’s high tech racer, instead we got an early look at how the machine handled six hours of motocross and cross country terrain.
Let it be known, the DS450 race debut was quite impressive as Team Can-Am / Craft Trading Center riders; Rob Weis, Jon Hughes and Scott Lidner rode the wheels off the completely stock ATV in the pro class and finished with a runner up overall.
When the lead ATV showed up at scoring on the first lap it was indeed Can-Am with a commanding 20 second lead. While the highly talented Team Shrum Racing passed their way through the pack, the stock Can-Am continued to dominate up front. As laps progressed and Shrum took over top honors, Team Can-Am found themselves in a heated battle with Team Dirt Works for the respectable runner up spot. This legendary battle continued four hours on end all the way to within feet of the 6-hour checkered flag at race’s end.
Dirt Works vs Can-AM – The Battle for the Overall Runner Up Spot
Team Dirt Works Motorsports, made up of Tim Miller, Stephen Miller and a former Missouri Cross Country stand out Josh Roberts, combined their efforts on one Yamaha YFZ to give fits to team Can-Am’s first voyage.
Yesterday Team Dirt Works’ Tim Miller posted a message in the forums about this incredible battle of team endurance. Tim’s post explains their incredible tale much better than we could….
