Dave Porter’s Old School

Well it has been a while since I’ve done one of these columns, but for 2013 I’ll have plenty to say. You see, in 2013 I’ll be spinning wrenches for my long time partner in ATV crime; Casey Martin. Casey and I will be competing at the highest level possible in quad racing, the mighty Pro class.
I’ll do what I can to bring you along for the ride as Casey and I go through the ups and downs of his rookie Pro season. This isn’t my first time wrenching in the Pro class and I’ve pretty much seen it all, so rookie or not I think we can have a great year together. I truly believe Casey will do better than most rookies do. I think he’ll do better mainly because of his attitude. He sure does have a good one, not much bothers him other than loosing that it.
To get our 2013 season started Casey and I met up in Harrisburg Pennsylvania for the 35th Motorama. The Motorama is a two-day indoor event at the farm show complex in downtown Harrisburg. Over 9000 people came to check out the races! Casey’s 2013 race bike wasn’t built yet so he rode my brand new Honda. Yep, I actually let someone else race my brand-new never-ridden race bike, I must really like this kid.
Things went pretty well for us. We pulled eight out of eight holeshots, won eight out of eight heat races and two out of four main events. All and all not a bad weekend considering it was a never-ridden machine and our rider only got eight laps of practice before the gate dropped.
Hopefully this is an indication as to what’s to come and we can do as well this year in the Pro class. I’m really looking forward to this season. I love this sport and the people in it. By all means, stop and see us at the nationals this year. We’ll be there to represent, race hard and be professional. But don’t expect any drama or seriousness. We’re pretty easy going and relaxed, well that is until the gate drops.
