Less than three months ago, Ray Christy, (one of the hardest working people in the ATV racing industry) was approached by Unlimited Sports to put together a renewed event, the Winter ATV Olympics. It was over seven years ago that anything like this was held. The event was one that combined Cross country, Supercross/TT, & Motocross ATV racing disciplines. The clincher was that the event was to be held in the middle of the off-season in sunny central Florida. Christy went straight to those who have supported us quad racers in the past. Sponsorship dollars were collected and the inaugural running of the Maxxis ATV Olympics was underway.

maxxistoweroly003Cross Country
The format was typical GNCC, a 6-8 mile course, a dead engine start, a grueling woods course, an awesome MX section, fuel pit stops, and a limestone quarry? To the approval of all on hand, the course looked great and Thursday’s cross country day was underway. The course had something to offer every type of rider. It was obvious who the true woods riders were, as the MXers were suffering from a severe case of “tree-magnetitis”. The morning session riders broke in the course and provided some great racing along the way.

The pro race posed some serious questions, which would be answered at 3pm’s finish time. Who was going to come out first? Were the MX riders going to teach the woods guys a thing or two about racing? Or would XC riders do the schooling? As the starter waved his flag, ten pro’s made their way into the woods, one after another, taking our questions with them. With seven bone-a-fide MXers and three front-running cross-country riders going at it, this was would definitely be one of the most interesting races of the season. The Motocross crowd cheered as Jason Luburgh aboard his new Nac’s/Cannondale Moto 440 made his way out of the woods in first place with a ten-second lead on both Jeremiah Jones (aboard his buddy Bill Ballance’s race quad) & William Yokely (Roll/CGR/Duncan). The Cross Country crowd just smiled silently as the race went on. They knew something that not even Luburgh had figured out yet. Cross Country racing is tiring, and he who paces himself properly usually wins. As laps progressed, the sandy track got extremely rough and whooped-out.

Jeremiah Jones borrowed his neighbors quad for the cross country portion of the inaugural Olympics. If it looks familiar, it should. Jeremiah's neighbor is none other than, National GNCC champion, Bill Ballance. Unfortunately for both, the LRD 250R's tranny blew to pieces on the first lap of the race.

You could almost hear riders begging for the white flag as early as the midway point.

Luburgh’s three-lap sprint was impressive, just not effective. Jones and Yokely also learned a valuable lesson as the race went on; DNF’s suck (especially on borrowed quads). In the end, it was GNCC pro #4, Chris Borich (East Coast ATV) with the last laugh. Borich disguised his race pace behind a flat-out haulin’ one! Some how Borich clipped through whops and launched off jumps faster than anyone, lap after lap. His charge in later laps would only be matched by one and only one rider, Matt Bartosek (Cap Steel/Hetrick/JB Racing/Baldwin). Bartosek also raced the pro production cross country race an hour before the pro race, where he finished sixth after he and his race crew experimented with a new CDI box on his Suzuki Z 400. The new box didn’t work too well in the production race but he and his Z sure were dialed perfectly for the pro outing.

You would think Bartosek would fade during closing laps. After all, everyone except Borich had drastically slowed with fatigue. Not the case at all. Somehow Bartosek charged at GNCC pro podium pace and kept Borich honest all the way to the end. Meanwhile, 2003 GNC pro class rookie, Jason “Slam Dunk” Dunkelberger (Lost Creek Cycle) slowly and steadily passed his way into a respectable third place position. At the checkers PA riders dominated the race, with Borich (Sunbury), Bartosek (East Springfield), and Jason Dunkelberger (Trevorton) taking the podium. Jason Luburgh made the Nac’s/Cannondale camp proud by holding on to his 4th place spot. Yet another PA rider, Matt White (Warren) rounded out the top five.

Super TT
As not to confuse anybody this was a tamed down Supercross track and had no resemblance whatsoever to a TT track. At approximately 2am on Friday morning, Mother Nature decided to welcome us to Florida with a 30-minute rain shower that would’ve had many scrambling to build an arc. Luckily for everyone, the track crew decided to postpone then extend practice, which provided near perfect track conditions come race time. The course was actually awesome, most racers ran their normal MX set up. Some went with just a tad more sag in their suspension. A TT scoring system was used in which the first moto, (heat race) was run strictly for gate position in the second moto, (main event) and would not effect your overall score. Knowing this, most riders rode conservatively thereby saving their strength for the the race that counted, — the main event.

Due to limited entries, the mains started far ahead of schedule. By 1:30 pm the youth classes were lining up on the gate, and the featured races were underway. The voice of GNC ATV racing, Mark “Banger” Straubinger, kept the crowd on its toes as he called the tight racing action. As the amateur main events came to a close, everyone got ready for the elite pro class. Would Chris Borich surprise us and show us that cross country racers are better overall riders? Or would the Motocrossers show everybody how it’s done in “sprint” races like this? As the gate dropped it was Mr. MX himself, Jeremiah Jones (Klotz/Sparks/JPMX), that pulled the holeshot followed by Matt Bartosek and rookie pro and “KY Kult” member Josh Starrett (JPMX/Trinity) in third. Jones immediately checked out with the early lead, as Starrett surprised himself and everyone within a 12 state radius by skillfully holding off the many attacks of Jason Dunkelberger and Jason Luburgh to maintain his third place position.jonesbartoseksprtt2oly03

Here’s an indication of just how close the battle for the win was between Bartosek and Jones.

As the race for third heated up, Bartosek began to masterfully reel in Jones up front. “Banger” vigorously called the on track action, but those die hard enthusiasts watching this race needed no one to help excite them on what was happening on the track. It started a quarter way through the seemingly endless race. Bartosek began to seriously pressure Jones for the lead. The Florida spectators, along with the pit-side spectators along the fence line had their eyes glued on the Jones/Bartosek battle for the win. For the next 10 laps the racing was intense, to say the least. Every turn, every jump, every bobble had the crowd holding its breath as Bartosek would not relent his commitment to win the race and beat the Ricky Carmichael of ATV racing. Bartosek got faster with every lap, Jones no stranger to battling for a win, simply sped up, kept his cool and held his lines. Something had to give. This race got extremely intense! Bartosek pressured hard for the win and even landed on Jones on one occasion. As many of you readers already know, this was the race that cost Bartosek his life. On lap 17 he collided with Jones again and crashed hard. More on this tragedy here. Jones went on to take the win. “I knew he wanted it bad. My back was hurting from our collision early and I almost pulled over and let him by. I figured I there was only a few laps left so I would just hold my line and try to win it. Now I wish I would have pulled over for him. This is a horrible thing. I just can’t believe it,” said Jones as he looked at the ground in sorrow after Matt was flown to the hospital on a life-flight. Jason Luburgh ended up with the second place finish, and Pennsylvania’s Matt White passed his way up to a well deserved third place podium position.

Motocross
Following the tragic events on Friday, the mood in the pits was somber and questions as to whether or not to continue with the Olympics arose. The promoters did the right thing and simply let the riders decide, and after hearing the reassuring words of GNC racing’s father-figure, Doc Ragon, the MX portion of the program was underway. The Motocross portion of the program would have probably been the most highly anticipated portion of the weekend, but no one seemed to be in a true racing mind. Regardless, several classes were combined since class sizes were small. This made the races quite challenging to follow. Certain races did somehow manage to stand out. The battle between GNCC Utility ace, Mike Penland (who has won over 100 GNCC events over his career!) and youngster Jonathan St. John stands out as one of the best races of the day. The duo went at it in the Utility Stock class, these two were doing the majority of the doubles on the track on utility quads! Since They traded wins in the cross country and Super TT events, the Utility Olympiad came down to the last lap on the motocross track. Penland poured it on in the end and won much to the delight of the Maxxis Tires reps (Jay Gobel and Thad Josey) in his pits.

Jonathan St John and Mike Penland were tooth and nail in all three events in the Utility class. Penland came out with the Olympiad Championship but definitely had to earn it.

Jonathan St John and Mike Penland were tooth and nail in all three events in the Utility class. Penland came out with the Olympiad Championship but definitely had to earn it.

Jason Luburgh also managed to stand out on his way to the pro-production class victory, as did Kyle Taylor and Blake Wright’s battles in both the 16-24 , and 250 A classes. Jeremiah Jones showed the Florida crowd just why many consider him the fastest ATV Racer in the world. Jones simply ran off in both motos, leaving the rest of the pro class wondering how it is he does it. Luburgh had the speed in moto one, but a mechanical gremlin got the best of him in the second moto. Jason “Dunk” Dunkelberger proved he’s ready for the pro class by running up front all day.

Summin it up
20 different Olympic champs were crowned, Floridians managed to horde the lion’s share with seven championships, while Kentuckians took home four, Georgia, New Jersey, Ohio & Pennsylvania each took two, and a lone Texas rider took home one. Seventeen different states were represented in all throughout the week.

Jonathan St John and Mike Penland were tooth and nail in all three events in the Utility class. Penland came out with the Olympiad Championship but definitely had to earn it.

So was the first annual Maxxis ATV Olympics a success? Absolutely! Even when faced with only 275 entries, uncharacteristically freezing weather, and Matt Bartosek’s unfortunate accident, the staff and track crew never lost sight of what it was they were doing — creating history, while at the same time providing us with a very professional run event.

…RIP Matt Bartosek.
