AM Slop
The race day started off with rain falling so hard, the only thing visible was the water running down the hills of the track and parking lot just as fast as the Ohio River. Round Six of GNCC racing at the John Penton track in Millfield, OH would be nothing short of a mud-fest.. The morning race of beginner and Women racers started off with rain drizzling onto their goggles as they awaited Ricky Towery to call “Ten seconds.”

The Women’s Class started on the first row with Stephanie Parton taking the holeshot from the inside and Nicole Pennycook racing straight up the middle for second place. By the second turn Traci Cecco worked her way into third place, looking for Parton up front. After the first lap Parton and Cecco were all alone riding back and forth through the rutted mud terrain. With both women fighting for the Overall position, Scott Kilby from the Utility Modified Class pushed his way through the ruts aboard his Kawasaki to take the Overall finish after three grueling laps. Two minutes from Kilby’s pace was John Wright from the Four Stroke Stock Class taking the second overall finish. While standing on the podium awaiting third overall, Kilby and Wright looked at their quads in amazement of what they just survived. Kilby smiled through mud covered eyes and mouth as he watched fellow classmates struggle across the finish line. Cecco got by Parton on the last muddy hill before the checkered flag. To Cecco’s advantage, Parton’s quad was cutting off due to the mass amounts of muddy water in the motor, making the hills a disadvantage for the current points leader. Cecco was able to work her way up the spectator-covered hill as Parton had to try again after failing at the first attempt. “We would just look over at each other and laugh. We couldn’t believe we were still making it. My quad was sputtering and hers was cutting out; they both sounded horrible,” Cecco commented about her battle with Parton after the race. Cecco crossed the finish line fourth overall, but as other morning race finishers came across the checkered flag, she dropped to eighth overall. Cecco was still all smiles after she cleaned the pounds of added mud from her face as she took the first place in the Women’s Class.

Just after one o’clock the Pro riders lined up on the starting line. The rain fell from the sky like from a water-spicket; one minute it would be falling full blast, then it would just stop for a second, then wide open again. Umbrellas dotted the starting area as riders huddled underneath them, hoping to stay dry for just a few more seconds. When the Pro riders were about to get the “Ten Seconds” calling, Carry JoRussell (Coombs) told the riders they were all heroes in her book for what they were about to do. William Yokley was able to take the holeshot off the start, but Bill Ballance and Santo DeRisi weren’t far off his rear tires.
ATV Scene.com’s own, Johnny Gallagher passed Ballance and moved into the lead but later pulled to a stop with mud in his eyes. It was so bad, he was rushed off to the hospital to have his eyes checked out. His cornea was damages torn, but he is expected to fully recover soon. “I’m thankful I ran across Trich Krashun, she helped me back to the pits. I was hurting and couldnt see a foot in front of me. It was really bad out there”, said the temporary blind Gallagher.

Page was determined to race the demanding course regardless of an injury sustained to his arm while doing work at his residence, but after his carburetor filled with water, he was forced to quit without completing a lap. Matt Smiley, whose bad luck had just turned around, struggled with a foul motor through out the race, leaving him visiting the pits frequently for adjustments. With Team Safari moving quickly, he was able to still finish on the lead lap in fifth place in the Pro Class.

The battle through out the day was between Chad Duvall riding for Mickey Dunlop aboard the Four Stroke Tech Machine and the GNCC Champion, Bill Ballance. Duvall had a run-in with another rider leaving him with a hurt leg on the last lap, giving Ballance the opportunity to push his speed on by Duvall.

Ballance was awarded Outwear’s Contingency money for the Overall finish. Ballance’s strategy for the race day was just to stay smart till the time demanded. “I was content following Duvall,” but not for long, cause the Champ pulled away for a twenty second lead. Ballance didn’t even have time to wipe the mud from his eyes he was so excited about his fifth consecutive overall finish for the 2003 season.

Joe Kish from the Open A Class raced flawlessly through out the race day. He was able to push his way into the top overall time just after the second lap. Kish was able to hold onto his speed to finish third overall. Kish was unable to join Ballance and Duvall on the podium, but just like all the other racers, he was cleaning his eyes out after the race.

Steve Holbert, aboard the Polaris, finished an impressive fourth overall. He was titled “mud flea” of the GNCC for always being strong when the mud came out. “I couldn’t see, but all I know is that I just kept moving; never letting off was my strategy,” Holbert added for his success.

Santo DeRisi was running strong at the beginning of the race too. “Santo went from side by side for first to fourth just like that,” father Joe DeRisi said after the race. DeRisi was close to passing Ballance on the second lap, but slid into the fence after battling on the muddy motocross. When DeRisi came in off the track, his two white eyes were bloodshot, just as everyone else’s was; leaving nothing but a mud smeared face and shivering body to clean up.

Round Seven of GNCC action will be at the new track on the 2003 circuit at Petersburg, VA. Be a part of the action, and maybe a little less mud.
