Wienen Wins Fourth 2014 AMA Pro ATV Overall
- Updated: June 29, 2014
Wienen Motorsports’ Chad Wienen flew his YFZ450R to his fourth overall win of the year at the sixth round of the 2014 AMA Pro ATV series at Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minn. on Saturday, June 28. The defending series champion put together dominating 1-2 motos to take the overall win over rival Joel Hetrick and teammate Thomas Brown, who rounded out the podium with 5-1 moto finishes. Wienen’s latest ATV victory continues his season-long possession of the red points leader’s number plate as the nine-round series now heads into the last three events.
Chad’s first-moto victory was just about as textbook as they come. Trailing rivals Josh Upperman and Josh Creamer on the first lap, Wienen settled himself down, picked out a strategy and then charged, advancing past Creamer into second place on lap two and then taking the lead over Upperman on lap three. From there, Wienen steadily began gapping the field, adding about a second a lap to his advantage until he had a comfortable six-second lead, which he held to the flag. Brown also moved forward nicely, starting inside the top 10 and then working his way forward to fifth on the penultimate lap.
Moto two was fabulous for the Wienen Motorsports duo, with Brown taking the win and Wienen finishing a close second. Brown started better this time – inside the top five – and used the good field position to move rapidly to second and then into first before the halfway point. Starting just outside the top five, Wienen likewise put his head down and moved forward, taking over second place before the halfway point and then charging after his teammate. Wienen pulled to within a half second of Brown with four laps remaining, but by this time Brown had his sights set on winning, turning up the heat and pulling out a 2.7-second margin of victory over his boss at the flag.
