Yamaha Quad-X Round 6-7 Highlights

By Karley Brown

ImageBeau Baron won the first moto for round six followed closely by teammate Davi Haagsma.Round six and seven of the STI Yamaha Quad-X Series returned for a double header at Southern California’s historic Glen Helen Raceway. This time around the track layout was very technical while the weather was gruesomely HOT as opposed to the opening rounds of the series. The big uphill and downhill triples and technical rhythm sections led to some exciting racing. Here’s a recap…

Round 6
Moto 1
As the gates dropped it was the H&M Motorsports, Curtis Sparks Powered #549 Beau Baron leading the Pro Class for the Moto 1 holeshot, with his teammate #422 Davi Haagsma right on his grab bar, followed by Golden West Yamaha #94 Dustin Nelson. The two teammates pulled away from Dustin and raced themselves to the checkered flag with a 20-second lead in front of Dustin Nelson who placed 3rd followed Josh Row 4th, Jason Fife 5th, Colt Brinkerhoff 6th and Lance Hancock 7th.

Moto 2
It was a swap of the teammates as the Curtis Sparks Maxxis rider Davi Haagsma taking the Yamalube GYTR $250 holeshot award with teammate Beau Baron in 2nd and Yamaha’s younger rider #417 Josh Row taking 3rd. Josh was quickly passed by his teammate Dustin, who was determined to catch up to first place. Davi and Beau were in race mode today and weren’t going to let anybody catch up to them; they kept the lead forcing Dustin to take 3rd place. At the end of the day it was Davi Haagsma who had the overall win followed by #549 Beau Baron in 2nd, #94 Dustin Nelson in 3rd, #417 Josh Row 4th , #39 Jason Fife 5th , Colt Brinkerhoff 6th, and Lance Hancock 7th.

Round 7
Moto 1
With the H&M motosports teammates taking the 1-2 in Saturdays race, it was Golden West Yamaha #94 who showed up swinging. As the gate dropped it looked as though the H&M teammates were going to run away with the race again, but in turn two of the first lap Dustin Nelson slammed into Davi Haagsma and pushed him clear off the track, this made Davi lose his momentum to go up the first hill. Dustin Nelson, now in 2nd, began charging after the leader Beau Baron. As the two came flying down Mount St. Helen, Dustin took an inside line in the rhythm section and doubled his way to first. Beau put pressure on Dustin but in lap-3 he made a mistake in a corner allowing his teammate Davi Haagsma to take over second and charge after Dustin. With all sorts of pressure from Davi, Dustin still took the win for this moto followed by Davi Haagsma, Beau Baron, Josh Row, Kory Ellis, and Lance Hancock. Jason Fife suffered a DNF.

Moto 2
The rivalry between Haagsma and Nelson heated up as the two waited for the gates to drop for the last moto of the weekend. As they charged out of the gate, it was Davi Haagsma who pulled the holeshot, followed by Dustin Nelson, Beau Baron, and Josh Row. In lap-4, Nelson blew a corner and got hung up on a berm, this mistake gave Beau the opportunity to get around him and move into the runner up spot. Beau did his best to catch up to his teammate, but he passed the checkered flag five seconds after Davi, followed by Beau Baron, Dustin Nelson, Josh Row, Jason Fife, Colt Brinkerhoff and Lance Hancock. Kory Ellis DNFed.

Overall, Davi Haagsma took 1st, Dustin Nelson took 2nd, Beau Baron 3rd, Josh Row 4th, Brinkeroff 5th, Lance Hancock 6th, Jason Fife 7th and Kory Ellis 8th.

The Quad X series will continue under the lights at Speedworld Motocross Park in Surprise Arizona Saturday September 29th.
