Eye of the tiger! Chris Borich is determined to win a pro national championship and replace that #2 with a big #1.

Right from the start of this season GNCCers anticipated that Chris Borich would be a major threat to win the 2004 GNCC Championship. After all, he sure did threaten Bill Ballance’s crown in 2003. The young pro rider has the look in his eyes, the look of hunger and determination – the eye of the tiger. Will he be able to do it this year? With a good collection of consistent races and a podium finish at Loretta Lynn’s, Borich has currently managed to earn third place in points. With several races to go, he is trying to stay strong and hold on to his number two plate. Along the way there is still a chance for his first pro national championship.

ATV Scene: What is new for Chris Borich in 2004?
Borich: A different bike, the new Yamaha YFZ450. It has a Leagar front end with East Coast ATV still helping me out. I have the same sponsors, and just picked up a few new ones. I am trying to get a stator that suits me; Ricky Stator is helping me figure out which one to go with.

ATV Scene: Have you missed your two stroke?
Borich: Yes. The beginning of the season I missed it, but I have been riding the Yamaha more and I am getting used to the power it has. So, I am starting to like it more.

ATV Scene: What machines have you been on this year?
Borich: Of course the Yamaha 450. I also have raced the new Honda 450R. I had one of the Suzuki 400’s, but we have already sold that. So now, I have the Yamaha and the Honda.

“On the gas”, might be the best way to describe Chris Borich

ATV Scene: Which quad do you like the best?
Borich: The Yamaha. I feel it is more competitive right now because there are more parts available for it. There has been a lot of testing already done for the Yamaha, but not a lot done for the Honda yet. There really isn’t’t a lot of stuff available for the Honda like shocks, swing arms, and a-arms.

ATV Scene: What have you done to prepare for 2004 and how do you stay in shape during the season?
Borich: I run about two miles a night. I try to ride as much as I can on the four-wheeler. I also have a little Z50 that I have been playing around on.

ATV Scene: Do you remember your first race?
Borich: Yeah, it was Pinegrove, PA. I was on a bone stock Honda 250R. I was going to race my dad and something happened to the throttle so I didn’t get to race. That was my first race. I don’t like watching. I learned that real quick.

Thanks to his dad and main sponsor, East Coast ATV – Borich’s race quad is always one of the sharpest in the pro pits.

ATV Scene: What have you learned being the youngest pro rider?
Borich: I started out in the B class and worked my way up after winning the B class championship. Then I won the A class championship. I learned a lot in that class especially how to pass riders. Now that I’m in the pro class it’s a whole new ball game though. It’s different here, you can’t just go fast and know how to pass. You have to get a good start, be smart through the woods and constantly make good line choices. You have to be in shape in order to stay with those guys till the end so you can make that last lap chance to take over the lead at the finish.

ATV Scene: What do you feel you still need to learn?
Borich: I think I have my starts down right now. I need to be able to hang in there for the whole race. You know, stay strong all the way till the end. I have been staying up there right now, but the bike has been beating me up a good bit. I think we almost have that figured out.

ATV Scene: When you aren’t’t racing on the weekends, what are you doing?
Borich: Usually working. When I get done working on the four-wheeler, I go out with my girlfriend.

ATV Scene: Monday to Friday job?
Borich: Working for my dad, car crushing.

ATV Scene: Age? Hometown?
Borich:21. Sunbury, PA

ATV Scene: Sponsors?
Borich: East Coast ATV, Custom Axis, WER, Maxxis, Troy Lee Designs, IMS, Tireballs, Curtis Sparks Racing Engines, Spider Grips, Kellner Motorsports, Up Dog Industries, DP Brakes, HiPer Wheels, Laegers, Outerwears, Renthal, Twin Air, and ExRiders.com.
