Dual Battery Box Kit for KTM XC from Action Motorsports
- Updated: March 22, 2010
My friend Brent Deen recently spotted something that he thought we should feature. After checking out his discovery I agreed with him, this find is surely worth noting. You KTM owners that haven’t discovered the impressive products from Action Motorsports in Decatur, TX will want to take a look at this. Of the hot new KTM products available from Action Motorsports, their new 24 Volt Dual Battery Kit for the XC interested me most, so we’ll take a closer look at it first. A better start can really help your race results, and offer a more fun cross country racing experience. Whether it be dust or mud, why eat a bunch of roost if you don’t have to? With the Action Motorsports XC Battery System you’ll have two batteries instead of one and 24 volts versus the stock 12 volts. With twice the power the XC will fire way faster and you’ll get off the line in front of all that roost behind you. The added battery mounts in the supplied Action Motorsports aluminum battery box, which mounts in front of the engine on the frame rails. This allows a low center of gravity. In addition to the aluminum battery box, the kit comes with wires, fasteners and straps. The kit retails for $150, and shipping is free.
What doesn’t come with the kit is a high performance maintenance free all position battery, but you’re in luck, Action Motorsports carries the Yuasa YTZ7S battery and a less expensive Bike Master TruGel MG7Z-S battery. Also not included is a trickle charge lead, which you’ll want to mount on the battery so you can easily plug a battery charger to your quad the night before your ride or race day. Don’t think you can get away with not charging your new battery. Because the KTM is based on a 12volt system, the extra battery is removed from the electrical system via the starter relay, so unlike the stock battery, the new front battery will not get charged from the engine. This is a little inconvenient but well worth the advantage you’ll have on the starting line.
If you’re really interested in having the biggest starting advantage possible you might consider swapping the stock clutch for a Rekluse clutch system. With this approach when you push the start button the quad will move forward while it fires. This is an almost unfair advantage, it’s almost like being shot out of the starting spot the instant the starter waves the start flag.
