Hitt Dominates
GNC Round 12 – US ATV Jamboree TT – Greeneville, TN – Sept. 2-3, 2000
332 TT competitors signed up to compete at the first annual United States ATV Jamboree GNC. The 400-acre complex features miles and miles of trails, a motocross track, and two dirt ovals. The fast, wide 4/10th mile oval made for fast-paced TT racing.
Saturday afternoon heat race action saw Shane Hitt (Sparks/Kames) motor away with a win and the Fast Qualifier honors. Ben Jackson (TC) holeshot the other heat with Tim Farr (DG/Ferrell/White Bros/Baldwin) in hot pursuit. Farr rode the low line in the big sweeper at the end of the back straight and edged ahead of Jackson for the win.
Rain clouds hung heavy over the I-81 Speedway park as Saturday evening’s Pro race program neared. The clouds let loose a torrent and the Victory Sports crew had no choice but to delay the race program until Sunday. Sunday morning brought partly cloudy skies and a smooth, tacky racing surface. Perennial TT fastguy Shane Hitt made for an uneventful race as he took the holeshot and rode away to a convincing win. Tim Farr ran second from start to finish. The story of the race was the third place battle between John Scott (Hollywood/Sparks) and Ben Jackson. Scott hasn’t raced since the early 1990’s. He suited up again last month for the Legends 2000 event—finishing second to Gary Denton. Scott’s got the racing itch again and showed up at I-81 (only twenty minutes from his home) to ride Justin Gandy’s Hollywood/Walsh RaceCraft/Sparks YZ426. Scott fought off the advances of Jackson (who was nursing fading rear brakes) to claim the final podium spot.
Mechanical gremlins kept speedy TTers Keith Little (PRC/Sparks/Roll) and Jeremiah Jones (Legacy/Sparks) out of the top ten.
PRO Class Results
1. Shane Hitt (Sparks)
2. Timothy Farr (Baldwin/Ferrell/White Bros/DG)
3. John Scott (Hollywood/Sparks)

7. Doug Gust (Nac’s/TC)
8. Tom Miller (TMM)
9. Michael Walsh (Walsh RaceCraft/Sparks)
10. Jimmy Elza (Nac’s/LRD)
In Pro-Am class action, Tim Farr thumped his Baldwin Motorsports/White Bros tuned Jerry Ferrell Yamaha to the Pro-Am 4-stroke win ahead of Dave Diver (Lost Creek/TC) and Jason Luburgh (TC) who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. 2000 class champ Kory Ellis (Trinity) already had the thumper title sewed up a round earlier. Shane Hitt extended his domination of the weekend with a 250 Pro-Am win. Doug Gust took home second place honors with future-star Darren Ogden claiming the 3-spot on his ultra-fast FTZ 250R. Justin Gandy bagged the 250 Pro-Am #1 plate. Jeremiah Jones (Legacy/Sparks) and Travis Spader led a pro-class invasion of the Open Pro-Am, with Jones leading the main from start to finish. Spader picked up runner-up honors while Banshee mounted fast guy Chris Bartholomew rounded out the podium. The big race in the Open class wasn’t for first though. Bryan Shipley (Duncan Racing) held a slim two-point advantage over Scott Butler (Trinity) in the points race going into the I-81 finale. Duncan Racing has enjoyed a stranglehold on the Open Pro-Am title with Spader and Doug Eichner winning the class for the past 5 seasons! Shipley and his ex-Spader Banshee did the dynasty proud finishing 5th in the main, but more importantly, besting Butler by two spots and clinching the title!

GNCC Round 10 – HardRock 100 — Fairmount, WV – August 26, 2000
Duvall Wins at Hardrock!
Chad Duvall (Duncan/Roll/Golden West) took the win on the difficult and challenging Hardrock course in Fairmount, WV. The course definitely lived up to its name. There were big rocks, little rocks, sharp rocks, and dull rocks with lots of big tree roots too. Let us not forget the famous Mama, Papa, and Baby hill. This set of hills was so bad that at times I thought I was riding through a quad-rolling contest. Of course since this is my first season I wimped out and choose the safe route up Baby hill. On one such pass I saw utility mod racer Richard Travalena roll his modified 500 Wolverine down Mama hill a good 50 feet. This broke Travalena’s frame and bent his handlebars down to where it looked like a sport bike. He still finished 2nd in his class! He was right behind his Great Outdoor Store team member Randy “Scott” Kilby and just ahead of Team Green’s Mike Penland. The Utility Mod. class is quickly turning into the Pro Utility class due to the close point battle between these three sponsored riders. My pit crew (my dad), reported to me that he never saw so many broken quads and people quitting after the first lap as at this race.
Pro Class Results
1. Chad Duvall (Duncan/Roll/Golden West)
2. Matthew Smiley (Duncan/Roll/Golden West)
3. Bill Balance (Maxxis/LRD/Lonestar)
4. William Yokley (Team Green Kawasaki)
5. Bradley Page
6. Daniel Destefano
7. Santo Derisi
8. Jared Huffman
9. James Wahl
10. Bryan Baker

Mid-Atlantic Series
The final round of the 2000 Mid Atlantic series took place a few weeks ago and ATV Scene was there to check it out. The series finale took place at the East Bend TT track in North Carolina, where TT racing is alive and kicking hard! Chad Lohr (Duncan/Roll) and Manley Jones were the big winners. They had 150 entries and spectators that were fired up about the action-packed racing. The track was awesome! As were the local riders that race there week after week. Those guys are dialed in and would definitely give the GNC TT frontrunners a run for their money. Reports from Randy Dinkens (the founder of the series) say that the series is growing leaps and bounds each year. Over 800 different racers have competed in MAATVA events in the past three years. Dinkens says they will have $40,000 worth of contingency for the members of the series! With the success of the Mid Atlantic Series, Dinkens proves where there is a will there is a way. We can see many more road trips to North Carolina in the future.
Carolina Quad TT Championship Cup
More championship caliper TT racing is slated for this fall in the Carolina’s. The 6 race series should prove to be a big success for racers looking to extend the season.

Enter ATVA!
It’s official! The AMA board of electives has set aside the monetary allowance to fund the all new ATV-only sanctioning body! Unanimous votes across the board, excited delegates, anxious congressmen – it’s all full-steam ahead for the ATVA and the future looks fantastic! The current task is finding a president worthy enough to lead the ATV-only march. ATVA members will unite to protect their right to ride ATVs. Your AMA or ATVA card will allow you to participate in motorcycle and/or ATV events. In short – you won’t need to spend the $39 membership twice if you happen to race both bikes and quads. Plans to sign up ATVA-only members include many event promotion displays at Glamis and other high ATV traffic happenings. What’s more is us ATVA members will receive our very own ATVA magazine/newsletter! And gone are the days of ATV coverage being lost in a sea of motorcycle news on the AMA website, — we’ll have our own ATVA website! There are many reasons that you need to become an ATVA member. One stands tall on our list — As you probably know by now, there are more and more ATV ride spots being closed all the time. And as in the past, there are many lawsuits that lead to government restrictions that tend to hold the sport back. Your ATVA membership dollars will be spent in many ways including making sure that ride spots don’t get closed without a fight — this includes lobbying the government and not taking no for an answer.

ATV Scene talks with Bill Ballance
By Scott Johnson
ATV Scene: How long have you been racing?
Ballance: Since 1994 on the national level but I raced local races 3 to 4 years before that.
ATV Scene: We all know by now that you flat out fly on the motocross sections. Did you use to race that prior to GNCC racing?
Ballance: That’s all I use to do when I raced locally. Then one year I ran a cross-country at Loretta Lynn’s. I guess it was ‘93 or so. I ended up winning my class. I think I was hooked on it from then on. The next year we decided to go full force for the next year.
ATV Scene: Is your current quad working a lot better for you than the Kawasaki was?
Ballance: It is something I helped LoneStar design for the 2-3 years prior to it’s release. It’s not a huge difference — but I do feel faster on it.
ATV Scene: There are a lot of rumors going around that you got a sweeter deal to go with the Maxxis Team. Is that true?
Ballance: After last year, being #2 for two years — and then dropping down to #3 after being so close to winning the championship, it gets in your gut a little bit. You get a desire to win. I’m not all about looking for the money so much as I am just going out and winning and proving what I can do out there. I was very fortunate in that when I decided to do this, Maxxis stepped up with a good deal of money and made it as good as what I had with Kawasaki.
ATV Scene: So first it was about the winning and the rest was just gravy?
Ballance: Exactly.
ATV Scene: What advice would you offer to someone who wants to come out and race in a GNCC race?
Ballance: Have your quad ready to fend off rocks for sure! You’ll need good strong wheels, 6 ply tires, and quality skid plates. All in all, a good sound quad because you’re going to be out there for 2 hours. Breaking down and not finishing the race, especially your first one, will only discourage you from sticking with the sport.
ATV Scene: Any new sponsors in the works? Will LRD still supply your power?
Ballance: Right now all the sponsors I have now are ready to go for next year. I am really comfortable and happy where I am. Yes, LRD is a big part of my success and they will be for years to come.
ATV Scene: What would you like to say to some of the big sports television networks. A perfect example is ESPN2’s Motoworld. They seem to say “bringing you the latest happenings in motorcycles and ATVs”, but never seem to mention anything about ATVs.
Ballance: If they would just give our sport another look they’ll find a wealth of interesting footage. They put on some good things now, but occasionally they air some stuff that will make you fall asleep! If they would get rid of some of that junk they would have room to showcase quad racing to their viewers. I know it would be tough to do since it is a 9 to 10 mile course, but if they would bring 4 to 5 cameras you could keep up with the pro class action on the challenging courses. This would definitely make for some awesome action that will keep people on the edge of their couches.
GNCC Hot Set-Ups 101
If you do not run Maxxis tires like our friend Bill Balance, then you may notice that in deep ruts the front end tends to get jerked out of your hands. Check the top pros set-ups out. William Yokley’s quad (shown here) sports ITP tires that have been slightly modified. By shaving the outer knobbies off the tire — sidebite gets reduced and fatigue from fighting the massive amount of traction is reduced.
It isn’t just for NASCAR anymore! Yep, ATV GNCC mechanics now glue their lug nuts in place just like the NASCAR teams do. You would be surprised at just how fast these guys can change tires with this method.
Making The Scene
Bryan Shipley
Determined to win a national championship, Shipley snatched up the very same Duncan Racing Yamaha Banshee that Travis Spader dominated the Open Pro-Am TT events on last year. In all 12 rounds Shipley rode hard for consistent finishes in Gary Denton-like style. Race after race, you would find the name Bryan Shipley in the top five results. Fittingly enough for Shipley and Duncan Racing, the final round of the GNCs was a TT event. The stage was set — the Duncan Banshee was tuned perfectly– all Shipley would need to do was better Trinity Racing’s Scott Buttler and the championship would belong to him and Duncan Racing. Bryan got a decent start and rode a strong yet conservative fifth place to the checkers – two spots ahead of Buttler. The points were tallied and the championship went to Shipley, who in our opinion is the most-deserving GNC champ of all-time! He’s been racing since the three-wheeler days – plugging along year after year chasing the same dream as many of you — a national championship. You won’t meet a more down to earth genuinely nice guy that lives and breathes ATV racing. His lifetime dream is now reality! Next year Shipley will proudly wear the number one plate in the Open Pro-Am class. And we simply couldn’t be any prouder or feel more of a part of his success since we’ve been right there with him — chasing the same dream. Be sure to stop by and congratulate and get to know him. You’ll see what we mean about this perfect role model for the sport. Shipley says that the Open Pro-Am class could very well be the biggest of all Pro and Pro-Am classes in 2001 and we agree. We’re happy he’ll be the guy that all those new riders will be gunning for.
ATV Jamboree
Victory Sports and their first ever US ATV Jamboree turned round 12 of the GNCs into a happening that very well could be the spark that attracts large crowds and more money into the elite GNC series for years to come. They had it all mud bogs, trail and demo rides, poker runs, tug of war competitions, dirt drags, and much more – all in conjunction with the GNC race. American Honda got involved, venders that would have passed on a TT-only race setup camp, spectators took a peak at all the happenings and racers had plenty to do and see all weekend. Sam Gammons, the main man behind Victory Sports promises a bigger and better event next year. He’s already talking of joining the 2001 ATV Jamboree with an ATV only Expo that would lure all the manufacturers to round 12 of the ’01 GNCs.
Tom Prendergast (Ref) and Mark Straubinger (Announcer)
Although not “officially” official just yet, Tom Prendergast and Mark Straubinger could very well become the referee and the announcer of all 12 rounds of the ’01 GNC series.
Prendergast has gotten involved at the Orrville, Loretta Lynn’s, and the Jamboree GNC events. If his recent helping hand at those events are any indication of what the GNC series will be like with him behind the helm as the official ATVA referee, than we’re all in for consistent, rule abiding, well organized and better run events! Prendergast has been an AMA Congress delegate for many years. He knows the rulebook inside and out. He’s also raced ATVs and currently continues to do so in the GNCC series.
Mark Straubinger brings a needed flavor to the GNC series in his witty, yet informative announcing skills. He aligned himself with many of the individual promoters of this year’s GNC series and has proved that a good announcer is not only enjoyed but also badly needed for a smooth-running event. The uninformed spectator and racers alike need to know what’s the latest run down on their favorite rider and what’s going on within the event. Having the same announcer at all the GNCs provides unparalleled knowledge that is just as needed as a consistent referee. Straubinger badly wants to be the go-to guy for ’01. In fact he’s expressed the fact that he wants to be even more involved than a typical announcer. We say have at it Mark and welcome both of them with open arms.
If you have observed Tom and/or Mark’s contributions at any of this year’s nationals and agree with the fact that the ATVA needs a consistent referee and announcer, then why not voice your opinion in writing. Send all your comments to: AMA Sports Manager Roger Ansel at ransel@ama-cycle.org
Shane Hitt
Shane “Dog” Hitt stands out as the guy to beat in TT and short-track racing. He doesn’t just win anymore – he dominates! Maybe he should have to run a cup of water in his fuel to make it a more interesting race to the checkers next year.
Joel Grover
We talked with good ole’ Joel at the recent Greeneville, TN GNC. Grover is employed by Pace Motorsports (a division of SFX Motorsports Group) and is playing a key role in getting ATV racing seen by millions. Grover says it’s official – the 2001 Pace Motorsports Monster Jam will feature real Pro ATV racing in at least 6 of the many stadium events throughout the United States. What’s more is that there is a good shot that TNN will cover the action on television! The series pulls an average of 50,000 people at each stadium. Add in the millions that will see the ATV action on TV, and you see the importance of what Grover made happen by pushing the issue to the powers that be at Pace (SFX). He drove home the fact that fans want to see fast-paced, bar-banging race action and they want to root for well-known stars within the sport. Our part as fellow ATV enthusiasts (and the stars within the sport) is to realize that they could very well put on a Quad Wars event for far less money and still entertain the crowds. We need to be thankful that they are allowing ATV racing to show it’s stuff at all – and we need to rise to the occasion and deliver action-packed excitement every time the quads are on the floor. That shouldn’t be a problem. The general public will be amazed at what the top pro quad guys are capable of. Joel went to bat, fouled off a bunch of pitches, and ended up hitting a homer! Thanks brother!
Darren Ogden
Man, can this dude flat-out fly at TT. He and his highly tuned FTZ motors are starting to give the top pros fits in the 250 Pro-Am class. At the Greenville, TN I-81 Speedway GNC event Ogden tucked behind Hitt and Gust all the way to the checkers in the 250 Pro-Am main event. Get this, Ogden won four of the six 250A TT events and earned enough points from the TT events alone to put himself in fourth place for the year end points race in the super tough 250A class! He easily won the TT 250A National Championship, but needed to score points in at least one MX to be eligible for total GNC points. On a side note, Ogden and Gust traded some heated words after their 250 Pro-Am heat race. It appeared that the confrontation started when Gust passed Ogden in a tight spot on the track, then later Ogden thought Gust was blocking him on the long back straight. We’re not sure what went down, but we do know that you’ll want to look for the number 64 of Ogden for exciting racing in ’01.
Tim Farr
We’re not sure how he did it this year, but Farr somehow collected enough points to finish fourth. With all the injuries he sustained from some of the nastiest crashes we’ve ever seen, you would think he would be camped at home for most of the year recouping. Instead he went out and rode hard enough that most would have thought he was unhurt. Our hats are off to tough man Farr on an extremely respectable year considering the many get-offs. Farr says he has a new fitness program and has arranged a way to put more time into practicing for next year. Don’t forget Farr will be the center attraction at the Pace stadium races coming in January, where he’ll wear the number one plate. We’re predicting many more championships from one of the very best ATV pilots in the world.
John Winkelbauer
Waterford, PA’s Winkelbauer makes the scene for beating up the competition in the 200cc Modified Air Cooled/300cc Four-stroke class at this year’s GNC series. Check out that cool sticker on the side of John’s tricked out Honda thumper. See the ATV Scene stickers just keep popping up everywhere!
ATV racing legend Marty Hart pairs up with Pug Power
Marty Hart has won more than seven National Championships in 3 and 4-wheel ATV racing. “Hart Attack” is one of the best known and highly respected ATV racing stars in the U.S. and abroad. In 1983 he began a successful 5-year tenure with the American Honda ATV factory team. What’s he up to these days?
Recently he raced to a respectable third place overall in the big Legends 2000 event. He’s raised more than a few experts’ eyebrows with his “Caged Grizzly” hybrid C-ATV and Honda 450 prototypes. With this he’s paired up with Pug Power to release a whole new concept of the name Cargo All-Terrain Vehicle. Under terms of the agreement, Hart will have a clean chalkboard with which to concept and design 4- and 6-wheel vehicles exclusively for Pug that reflects the parties’ shared mindsets. These vehicles – the first tentatively slated for a 2001 unveiling – will be unlike anything on the market today. Signature features will include high-performance maneuverability over extreme terrain, significant cargo capacity and a side-by-side seating configuration.
Hart believes Pug Power will excel as a manufacturer of high-performance, high-quality CATVs that offer a little something extra. “Their point of differentiation will lie in the fact that they’ll make a high-performance all-terrain product with the cargo capacity of a UTV,” stated Hart. “This partnership will not be about racing. It will be centered around putting high-performance craftsmanship – perfected on the professional ATV racing circuit – into each Pug Power vehicle. Consumers need to know that some of the most innovative minds in ATV design will impact the development of these vehicles – and more importantly that these vehicles will be capable of performing any given task.”

PRP Racing introduces their DDT aftermarket race frame
Dave Porter and Douglas Shaffer have been racing prototype DDT frames at this year’s GNCs. Need proof that the frame setup works? Porter won the Vet +30 National Championship on his and Shaffer locked up the Grand National title in the Open A class with his. The frame uses the same proven 250R geometry but boasts much more strength than the stock counterpart. According to PRP Racing, the DDT frame will be the lowest priced aftermarket frame on the market ($1,795). It will be available in mid-October. They are currently taking orders. TJ Cycle Shoppe will be the exclusive dealer (888) 899-5451. They welcome your e-mailed questions at prpracing17x@cs.com
Scott Generky Joins the Scene
We are pleased as punch to announce this! Starting in just a few short weeks, Scott “Jerky” Generky (research and development guru at Autolite Spark Plugs and chief mechanic behind GNC number 7 Ben Jackson) will join the ATV Scene team. In the newest ATV Scene column—Jerky’s World– Scott will interview anyone and everyone from riders, aftermarket bigwigs, ATVA officials to flaggers and trackworkers on the Scene of the big races. These won’t be your everyday boring interviews. Look to “Jerky” to live up to his whacked self with nothing but interesting and informative reading including one-of-a-kind pictures that only “Jerky” could come up with. Who do you want to be Jerky’s first interview (AKA victim)? Give him a shout out with your ideas at jerky@atvscene.com
