Summer is over, at least for GNCC racing. Riders have been working hard to keep in shape and new equipment was seen through out the pits on the first day back to racing after the break. Walking down the pro pits was like witnessing a new season’s worth of equipment. There was plenty of new machines glistening in the sun. First and foremost, champion, Bill Ballance was finally pulling out the Suzuki thumper we have heard so much about. The black machine was decked out with one top secret weapon no other rider could get a hold of, — a new set of Maxxis radial tires. These monsters were unlike the Razor 2’s that Matt Smiley had. The rear tires had more spaced out, thicker tread that are more puncture resistant and increase the ability to slide in turns. Jay from Maxxis said, “It is top secret. There are only two sets of those tires, both belong to Bill”. Ballance has been testing the tires over the summer. Jary from Maxxis said the release date is still up in the air.

Chad Duvall wasn’t on the GasGas 450 like rumors had suggested. Spotting Mickey Dunlap, Four Stroke Tech Team Owner, in the pits, he confessed that they were still having starter problems with the GasGas. Instead Duvall was on the new YFZ Yamaha, and having been riding it during the summer, was enjoying its power. The Dunlap motor had a special treat locked in tight. “I feel confident that with the motor in the Yamaha, Chad can take the overall today”, Dunlap proudly boasted before the race. Smiley also put the LRD frame machine aside and was aboard the mighty new Yamaha. Could this change be permanent? No one would tell for sure!

Enough show and tell — Let’s race!
When the green flag went into the air, it was none other than William Yokley, aboard the Suzuki leading the way with a picture perfect holeshot. Chris Borich and Santo DeRisi were right on his rear tires. With the nine-mile course ahead of them, the track conditions were wide open in spots, and gnarly in others. The Taylortown track is notorious for the long grassy field stretches and the rounding of several small ponds. By the end of lap one, DeRisi had took over the lead. “On the first lap, I was thinking, — this feels like my day”, DeRisi said after the race. Confusion rang soon after learning that Champion Bill Ballance, Chad Duvall, and DeRisi all missed the four winding turns that wound lead them through the scoring area on the first lap. How? Matt Smiley swung wide coming out of the woods section and cleared out a few banners. Riding at top speed, like most pro riders do, the guys missed the right turn and saw the track to the left, leading them away from the scoring tent. “WHAT TO DO?” pit crews were yelling. With DeRisi making his first appearance in the overall spot, he didn’t want it taken away. Champion Bill Ballance couldn’t afford a throwaway at this point either, so the call was made. The three riders would be stopped at the scoring tent at the end of lap two and held for the time it should have taken them to round through the part they missed. Fair? No one was complaining!

Lap two came around just twenty-five minutes later with Ballance and Duvall right together. Pulling over for their thirty seconds, they realized the mistake. Bill, a three time national champion, could realistically make up that kind of time. And Duvall has plenty of speed up his sleeve and today he was toting some serious RPMs on the Yamaha, – this thing was about to get real good. As they counted seconds Matt Smiley ripped through the tent leaving DeRisi to pull over with Ballance and Duvall waiting with fifteen seconds remaining. With Ballance and Duvall playing catch up, that left two men doing battle for the lead. Chris Borich and Smiley were wheel to wheel the whole third lap with Yokley just twenty seconds off pace. By the end of lap three, Borich and Smiley were still tapping wheels with Yokley fighting off Brad Page, Duvall and Ballance, all within seconds of Yokley.

At the eight mile marker, the update was: Borich still holding onto the first place position. Smiley fell ten seconds off Borich’s pace with Duvall’s Yamaha competing against Smiley’s. Ballance was riding in fourth over a minute behind Duvall with Yokley holding off Page. Two lap card was out with Borich pulling twenty seconds over Smiley. Yokley took back the third place position with Ballance, Page, and Duvall back and forth. DeRisi made up some time, only twenty seconds back for seventh.

The white flag was waving as Borich pulled a bigger stretch from Smiley. Ballance pulled in for fuel, jumping in front of Yokley as he rounded the final turn on pit-row. Duvall and Page were just twenty seconds back. DeRisi pulled in the pits with smoke pouring from under the front plastic. Pit crew chief, Thad Cook, grabbed some water and poured it on the radiator. Smoke billowed into the air as the whole pit crew lifted the front tires off the ground for better access. After nearly two minutes of pouring water to clean the mud from the radiators, DeRisi took back off on the chase.

Borich rounded the last turn as he crossed the finish line for the overall, making it two in a row for the 2003 season. Less than a mile away, Smiley was holding off the champion as they were bumping nerf bar to nerf bar. The crowd got to see the excitement as the duo popped out of the woods, rounding the last three turns before the checkered flag. Smiley was in front, and then they were side by side! With just inches between them they crossed the finish line, with Ballance’s quad nose in front. Referee, Ricky Towery, called the finish with Ballance taking second overall. Yokley and Duvall’s action wasn’t quite as exciting, but nonetheless, they were battling it out right to the end as well. Only two quad lengths separated them as they shifted in top speed rounding the hay barrels in the fields. With the last few turns approaching, Duvall made a clean move to take fourth overall, less than a minute behind Smiley. Brandon Ballance pulled out an incredible finish of seventh overall behind Page.

James Wahl came from the A class to take home a tenth overall finish at Mathews Farm. Wahl was riding smooth in the first place position for most of the day, making this his fourth A class win and his fifth top twenty overall finish for the 2003 season. Brian Schmid took his first top twenty overall from the Open A class as well as his second Open A win of the year. Just outside of the top twenty overall was Eric Conner from the 4 Stroke A class, taking a hard-fought battle from first, to third, back to first in his class.

Morning Race Overalls
Stephanie Parton took the morning race overall from the Women’s Class. Traci Cecco took the holeshot, but after a mile and a half into the track, Parton passed Cecco and never looked back. When asked about the hardest part of the race track, Parton, sponsored by Troy Racing, LRD, and Maxxis said, “The men, they don’t accept that we are faster.” She laughed as she took her fourth overall for the 2003 season. “Looking at the points, I only need one more win to have this championship wrapped up,” Parton stated. Second overall went to Jason Williams from the 4 Stroke Stock class. “I haven’t raced in three years, and I came back thinking I wasn’t going to be any good.” Williams was aboard the Yamaha and loved it. Doug Henke from the Utility Unlimited pulled out an incredible finish of third overall for the morning race at Mathew’s Farm.
