Walking through the pits before the race, I spotted LRD/Maxxis/Honda of Troy backed Bill Ballance prepping the most recent addition to his fleet of race quads. Ballance was going to be aboard the Yamaha YFZ this weekend. “I am just taking the opportunity to try out all the new stuff. All my sponsors are giving me products to test and evaluate, and with my point’s lead, I am taking advantage of the time to try it out at race pace,” said Ballance. “Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything. I haven’t signed anything yet for the 2004 season. By riding these quads, I am seeing what I like best, as well as knowing what the competition will be on for next year.”

Letting Ballance get back to preparing his quad, I pulled his brother Brandon Ballance aside to ask him about the recent factory support for GNC riders, Farr and Gust. “I think it is going to be great for the whole sport. I believe it is only starting there, and before long, it will make its way to GNCC racing as well. I hope to be asked on a factory team someday like many of us.” Brandon has had some rough luck this year since taking the overall at the season opener in Florida. I also got a chance to ask William Yokley before the race if there was any jealousy towards Gust with his Suzuki ride. “No, I can’t be jealous right now. I want it, but it will make its way here and I hope I am one of the guys in line to get some badly needed help. I have been true to Suzuki hopefully, they’ll spread the wealth.”

With Bill Ballance on the starting line aboard the Yamaha, lined up next to Smiley on his Yamaha, the crowds were going crazy with who to cheer for. Kentucky’s finest racers were the crowd’s favorite. Bill Ballance, Brad Page, and William Yokley all hale from KY. But when Ricky Towery raised the green flag, none of the above rose to the occasion. Instead it was the youngster, Chris Borich, on the old 250R based ATV. Smiley and Yokley were nipping close to his rear tires as they raced through the first dusty open field sections. By the fourth mile marker, Smiley took over the number one ride with Borich, Yokley and Santo DeRisi all over one another. Coming through the barrels on lap one was Smiley just ten seconds ahead of Yokley. The third place battle was close between DeRisi and Borich with Todd Knippenberg and Johnny Gallagher ten seconds apart. With the dust as thick as it was, the race was still anybody’s.

Starting out for lap two, Borich pulled into the pits to fix the rear caliber for the brakes; sitting in the pits for over four minutes, put him back in the pack and left to play catch up for the day. After battling lapped riders, the long dusty field sections, and the rocky creek run, Smiley made it through the barrels on lap two just a second ahead of Yokley. Brad Page fell to just thirty seconds back. Eric Conner from the Four Stroke A Class came in just forty seconds off Smiley, putting him in the Overall spot, even before adjusted time! Could Conner hold onto the pace? Would we see a Four Stroke A racer pass Smiley? News broke in the DeRisi pits that Santo broke a chain and was being brought in by Buren Hamrick. DeRisi didn’t need this kind of luck after running on such a good streak lately.

 

Yokley turned up the heat on lap three, tired of waiting behind Smiley. Just a half mile into the track, Yokley took the lead and ran away. After the nine mile battle, Yokley pulled in for gas; as he pulled out, Smiley was just rounding the turn before his pits to get gas as well. Page made a quick stop to yell to the pit crew about what was going on before he took back off. Greg Trew was holding off Joe Kish. Kish was in Open A and after seeing he could finish third overall at Millfield, OH, has finally jumped in the Pro Production to try his hand at the Big League. Eric Conner was spotted in the pits with a hurt collar bone again. Earlier in the season, after Conner had put in some good finishes, he hurt his collar bone, putting him on the side lines for a couple of races. Conner was back at it in Taylortown, PA, taking the first place position.

The white flag was out and Yokley was in the Overall with a minute lead over Page. Smiley was just thirty seconds off and Knippenberg was in fourth holding off Kish and Jenks. Borich was moving along, making the fastest lap and moving into seventh overall. Once again riders from the Four Stroke A Class were back in the top ten overall. Bryan Cook, no stranger to being in the top ten overall, was riding in eighth with Jeff Stoess just seconds behind him for ninth. The two riders have been battling the season out back and fourth in the point’s race. This is one battle that may come down to the finish at Indiana to determine a winner.

The dust wasn’t the only thing thick on the last lap. The fans packed around the finish line to watch as the Overall winner came through the opening from the woods. A minute late from his previous lap time, the Spartan Overall Champion came hauling around the turn out the woods, kicking up thick clouds of dust. Yokley got on the podium with his Suzuki, yelling his motto, “Hell yeah.”

Taking second overall just thirty seconds back was Duncan Racing’s Brad Page aboard the Kawasaki. Over a minute later, Smiley came in to put his new Yamaha up on the podium for third again. A minute and a half later, Knippenberg came in for his best 2003 finish at fourth overall. Jeremy Rice put in his best finish of the 2003 season at the Spartan event with second in the Pro Class and fifth overall. Borich didn’t look tired after the race after riding at incredible speeds to catch up to an impressive sixth overall.
The A riders did it again. Bryan Cook was able to better his overall position as he finished seventh overall, along with his fifth Four Stroke A Class win. Jeff Stoess was only thirty seconds behind for second place as well as eighth overall.

Cecco claims the AM overall
The Women’s Class was started back on row number one, where they feel they should be. Stephanie Parton took the holeshot with Angel Atwell and Traci Cecco side by side for second after flying across the fields section for half a mile. From the Utility Stock Class, Mike Penland took another holeshot, working on making it win number four for the year. In the Four Stroke Novice 16-24 year old Class, Will Cashion took another holeshot off row number six.
On the end of the first lap, Richard Travalena from Four Stroke Stock held the overall spot with Cecco in front of Parton by just two seconds. Jennifer Fulkerson and Heidi Landon were in third and fourth. Penland was back to second with Dan Mcconnaughey out front. Cashion was out front by twenty seconds over Erik Haspel, holding onto eighth overall. On lap two, Parton took back over the lead for the Women’s Class by just twenty seconds. Cashion moved up to sixth overall, still holding a minute and a half lead over Haspel. Travalena fell back to third place and eighth overall letting John Wright get into first place with Tyler Lenig in second.

Traci Cecco was on the last lap racing as hard as she could while Parton pulled into the pits to fix a left flat tire. With over two minutes back from Cecco, Parton couldn’t get back into the overall spot. Cecco was all smiles as she pulled up on the podium for her first morning race overall for the 2003 season. After finishing second overall at four races, Cecco made her way to Overall. Taking second overall for the day was Wright from Four Stroke Stock and third Travalena nearly two minutes back from Wright. Cashion was able to put in an incredible ride for the day at seventh overall, with Stephanie Parton in eighth overall.
